The M in S.T.A.M.P.E.D

Today we will discuss the M which stands for Media in the acronym S.T.A.M.P.E.D. Media is the fluid or gas that is transported inside the hoses.
We have already discussed S for Size, T for temperature and A for Application previously. We did touch upon the media in the T and A related blog posts when we discussed the temperature and applications.
So along with the temperature of the media, it’s compatibility with the hose material is an important factor to be considered.
A hydraulic hose typically consists of the inner tube at the core, the reinforced layer and the outer protective layer and all the materials used needs to be compatible with the media it is being used for. In a hose assembly the media should also be compatible with the end fittings and seals used. Hence the entire ‘assembly’ needs to be chemically compatible with the media being used, failing which there is a high risk issues like erosion, hose cover blisters, failure of end fittings and/or seals, deterioration of the hose material which in turn may lead to contamination of the media affecting the entire hydraulic system. This may damage expensive equipment to resulting in a prolonged shut down and down time.
Consult with your hose provider, ask for a chemical resistance chart that will help you to classify and identify the fluid from your application and match it with a compatible hose materials including end fittings and seals.
