Check valves (also known as one-way, non-return,  and clack valves) are unique in their ability to allow the flow of fluid in only one direction.  This function is important and essential for a number of applications for safety as well as to prevent overflow.

Check valves work on the basis of a two-port system with an opening where gas or fluid is allowed in to the first port and the flow is regulated by means of a mechanism that separates the two ports and allows the fluid to flow from the first to the second port and out into the outgoing pipeline, without allowing the fluid to re-enter the first port.

Types of Check Valves

Ball Check Valve – A ball is used as the mechanism to separate the two ports.

Swing Check Valve – A small door on hinges is used as the mechanism between the two ports, also know as a tilting disc check valve.

Disc Check Valve – This is a more complex check valve, with a disc mounted on a spring that acts as the controlling mechanism.

Split Disc Check Valve – This is also known as a  dual plate check valve and operates with a door that is split down along the centre, and only folds in one direction to regulate the flow.

Diaphragm Check Valve – In this check valves, a flexing rubber mechanism is employed to allow the fluid flow in only one direction.

Apart from the common check valves mentioned above, there are many more available, while newer and improved designs are constantly being developed.

Check valves are a popular and preferred choice used to help boost the efficiency of a system and also to  ensure safety in some.  For instance, check valves can operate even when a facility loses power or when a device is off, keeping the flow rate and direction steady, while preventing reverse flow. Check valves prevents flooding in devices like water heaters, and prevent damage to control valves, strainers, flow meters and similar equipment that may be affected by the reverse flow of materials.
