A  ball valve is aptly named as it refers to any valve that uses a ball to control the flow of fluid from one opening to the next.  The bore or port is located at the centre of the ball and in the open position, this central port is aligned up in he same direction as the connected pipeline to allow the fluid or gas to flow through.  The ball valve returns to the closed position when the port as such a positioning allows the fluid or gas to flow through.

Most standard ball valves are designed so that only a 90 degree rotation back and forth is available, though there are a few which offer 360 degree rotation.  The ball valve is a popular choice for a lot of industries as it is quick to operate and provides a reliable air-tight sealing in the closed position.  However ball valves are not the ideal choice in throttling-like applications where constant wear on the seats could compromise their sealing capacity and result in leakages.
