We have discussed the S and the T in previous posts, so today we will learn about A which is for Application.

Application here refers to the ‘circumstances’ or atmosphere which the hose will be exposed to. This means we have to take into consideration the media that will be conveyed through the hose, external exposure to ozone and chemicals and even the extreme temperatures be it high or low of the climate at the location where the hose will be used. In rare cases, hoses may even be exposed to open flames or even icy conditions. So to sum it up, Application refers to the overall environment and operating conditions the hose will be exposed to.

For example “application” may denote a high abrasion area that is typical in mobile hydraulics in construction equipment like excavators, bull dozers and such earth moving equipment. For such an environment the hoses need to have a strong external cover without which the hose will fail early in its life.

Sometimes in tight spaces, the hose may need to be routed through a sharp turn and hence the bend radius of the hose will be one of the critical factors in choosing the right kind of hose for this particular application.

Another instance of application could be that there might be a need for external protection for a hydraulic hose from molten splash due to manufacturing processes that occur in some heavy metal industries. Without the right external protection the hose is bound to fail.

Then again, non-conducive hoses are used where machines operate near high voltage sources like power lines and electrically conductive whereas electrically conducive hoses are standard for inflammable materials like fuel, as these allow any electro static charge formed to convey directly to the metallic ends connections where charges can be ground.

So as you can see there are several conditions and situations that needs to be considered prior to zeroing in on the hose most suited for the conditions.
