Are Teflon hoses really expensive?

Teflon PTFE paste used in the making of a high grade hydraulic hose is a premium material and hence initial cost of the host may seem high when compared to traditional rubber hoses.  However when the total life cycle costs between the two are compared, Teflon hoses may often come out as the more economical choice.

In almost all cases a Teflon hose will outlive a thermoplastic hose or rubber hose under most operating conditions.  While the cost advantage with Teflon hose is greatest when operating conditions are the most severe,  it is always present and the benefit is significant in almost all cases.

When comparing costs of a Teflon hose and traditional rubber hose the higher initial acquisition cost may seem very high for the hose made with Teflon.

However, when other considerations are factored in Teflon hose emerge as a clear winner, viz.,

  • How much does a scheduled hose change cost in terms of lost production due to downtime, new hose and fittings and associated labour. How much can you save if the scheduled hose changes intervals can be fewer with Teflon hose?
  • How much does an unscheduled downtime costs due to hose failure that is unpredictable or frequent?
  • How much does contamination due to the build up of material in the inner walls of the hose  cost  annually? What if you could almost completely eliminate  this contamination?
  • How much can you save in expensive boiler additives with Teflon hoses, otherwise lost due to permeation when using rubber or thermoplastic hoses?

There are also hidden benefits with Teflon hoses. Generally these hoses have a stainless steel outer braid which projects “Quality” to the equipment that they are attached to.  This visual cosmetic appeal makes the equipment more  presentable and creates a good first impression with potential customers.

The benefits of a investing in a Teflon hose assembly can thus be evaluated  on the total life cycle cost and other intangible benefits, and not just on the initial investment cost.  Very often, if viewed in this fashion, you may find that the Teflon hose may turn out to be the lowest cost solution.

Teflon hoses are not the answer for each and every application, however they can deliver significant lower life cycle costs than rubber or thermoplastic hoses in broad range of applications.
