Hydraulic Ferrules Dubai
The role of ferrules in tubing and flexible hydraulic hoses
Single or Double is the question…
Double/Twin/Two ferrule all refer to the same, just in case you were wondering. It is just that people know them by different names. Compression fittings used in tubings fall into two categories single ferrule or the twin ferrule type.

In both cases a ferrule is pushed and compressed into a taper by a hexagonal nut being tightened.
In a twin ferrule scenario, one ferrule has a sealing function and the other a tube gripping role, and the respective ferrules are optimised for its specific function.
The ferrule on the front creates a seal on the outside diameter of the tubing and against the fitting body. As the hexagonal nut is further turned, the back ferrule advances along the length and applies an effective radial tube grip”. Hence it is imperative that you align the inner and outer ferrules in the right directions to make it work.
Single ferrule are usually recommended for carbon steel components. When it comes to Stainless Steel 316 components, double ferrule fittings are recommended.
Here are a few tips when working with double ferrule fittings :
- Always buy extra fittings and nut and ferrule sets.
- Do not lose the ferrules. Ensure the nut is screwed on the fitting so you don’t lose the ferrules, but first make sure that the ferrules are inserted in the right orientation. Check it more than once.
- It is a good idea to install all nuts prior to final fitting on the pipes
- Never mix metric and imperial sizes
- Avoid mixing ranges. Do use components from the same range from the same manufacturer.
- Try using standard fittings. Unusual fittings may not be easily available and may have to be custom made.
- Always pressure test prior to installation.
- Do not compromise on quality of materials and tubing to cut costs. Instead endeavour to simplify the design and try to reduce the number of joints and fittings used.
- Clean all tubings thoroughly prior to installation and commission.
Something to ponder even before you start thinking of a design.
Flexible Hoses or Rigid Pipes? Rigid pipes with compression fittings will always be preferred for a permanent installation. However, everytime you encounter vibration, mobility, mis-alignment or ease of servicing-during the design stage, flexible hoses can be the answer. Then there is always the option to mix and match.
