The S in S.T.A.M.P.E.D
Learn more about S.T.A.M.P.E.D here.
In previous articles we have talked about the S.T.A.M.P.E.D acronym used by the industry. S.T.A.M.P.E.D can be expanded to Size, Temperature, Application, Material or Media, Pressure, Ends, Delivery. Today we will look at the first one S for Size.
In a bespoke hose assembly size is the foremost important bit of information for a hose professional assembling the hose.
Most users are pretty familiar with the two principal measurements, the inside diameter or i.d. of the hose and the Outside diameter that is the o.d. The inside diameter is the length of the innermost tube of the hose (i.e. the line or chord that has its end points on the circle formed by the inner circle and passing through the centre of that circle i.e the diameter of the circle formed by the inner tube) and can be as small as 1/8” to upto 10” or more.
In several critical applications, the id of the replacement hose should be an exact match to the original hose of the equipment as this affects flow rates and helps to ensure that the designed and designated amount of fluid that the machine needs to run optimally and efficiently.

The second obvious measurement is the O.D. or outside diameter of the outermost layer. This measurement is especially critical in applications where hoses are located in a confined space or routed around a piece of equipment or even placed inside a protective sleeve. For e.g. in several hydraulic construction machinery, the hoses are also moving in many instances and are routed through a specially designed groove, hence matching the i.d. to the original equipment hydraulic hose is very important.
The last measurement is of equal importance and is commonly referred to as the overall length or OAL. OAL is different to the hose length. The following points need to be kept in mind to calculate OAL.
- Male threaded ends are measured from the end of their threads.
- Female threaded ends and flanged ends are measured from their sealing surface.
- Angled ends are measured from the center of their sealing surface.
The hose cut length is measured based on the OAL and the cut-off factor. The hose cut length for a hose assembly is calculated by subtracting the cut-off factor (distance from the bottom of the ferrule or collar to the end of the fitting or an internal sealing surface).
In the example below, take special note of Dimension “B.” Knowing the overall length of the assembly desired, subtract the “B” dimension for each fitting from the overall length to obtain the hose cut length.
