The UAE or United Arab Emirates, is a federation of seven emirates on the eastern side of the arabian peninsula, that has grown to be one of the most important economic centres in the Middle East.
It is a delicate mixture of conservative tradition and liberally modern country that tolerates different cultures and beliefs.
Ever since oil was discovered in the middle of the twentieth century, UAE economy was largely based on fishing and pearl farming industry. Oil exports begain in 1962, and since then there has been a consistent and speedy transformation of the economy and society.
The UAE has since diversified it’s assets all over the world and also transformed itself into a important trading and business centre in the region. The seven emirates that make the U.A.E are Abu Dhabi the Capital, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah.
UAE has a numerous malls which are very modern and you can buy just about any product available in most modern cities in the world. There are several hotels and resorts offering every kind of an experience to the travellers and tourists mainly in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. For people wanting to tread off the beaten track, there are amazingly magnificient sand dunes on the edge of the empty quarter and rustic but awesome wadis in the north eastern side near the Oman border.
Public facilities and roads are quite modern though very crowded at times, and supermarkets offer an assortment of Asian, European and American products both branded and unbranded along with items from the region. Major multi-national brands like Carrefour and Ikea have a good presence here with almost all popular fast food chains (mainly from the U.S.) are widely popular. There are still a few traditional souks that can be visited, provided you can avoid the lure of the amazing malls dot the emirates.
UAE is a potpourri of Emirati Arab culture mixed with Asian, African and cultures of other immigrants who together make it a vast and vibrant melting pot of varied culture and tradition. This is not surprising as 80% of the population is expat, mainly from the Indian sub-continent and also from western countries as well as from just about everywhere else.
Weekends in the UAE run from Friday to Saturday for most offices and businesses, while some work all day on Saturday too.
