Anti-freeze coolant is carried by a radiator hose to and from the radiator on any engine.  On most engines there are two main radiator hoses, one upper radiator hose which carries coolant from the top of the radiator to the top of the engine, to keep the engine from overheating and the lower radiator hose which connects the bottom of the radiator to the water pump which pumps the coolant throughout the system.  The two hoses are connected to their ports with hose clamps.  If the clamps fail or if one of the hoses develop a leak, the anti freeze liquid will leak out and this will result in the engine over-heating.

Here is a quick checklist for preventative maintenance of radiator hose.

  1. Visually inspect for cracks, fraying or bulges. Cracks and fraying may develop in a rubber radiator hose as it dries out. Bulges develop when the rubber hose weakens over time. If any of these things are noticed, it is time to immediately replace the hose.
  2. Squeeze the hoses. While a radiator hose should be firm, it should not be too soft or overly hard. The hose should feel firm overall. If you find a particular spot which is overly hard or too soft, this is a sign that the hose needs to be replaced.
  3. Check all the hose clamps. Make sure that all the hose clamps that attach the hose to the engine or to the radiator are snug. If you can turn the clamp by hand at all, the clamps are too loose and you need to tighten them.

Radiator hoses may be difficult to locate and reach for inspection, so it may be necessary to use a professional service to inspect the hoses.
