A metal flexible hose is a metallic line element that is designed to be flexible. The two main types of metal hose based on design and their application are corrugated hoses and stripwound hoses. While Stripwound hoses have a higher tensile and tear strength, corrugated hoses typically provide maximum leak prevention and can withstand higher pressures on account of their design. Corrugated metal hoses are also more resistant to corrosion even in sea water or at extreme high or cold temperatures when and hence is well suited for transferring cold and hot substances.
The first metal flexible hose designed was a stripwound hose invented by Heinrich Witzenmann a German Jewellery designer with a French Engineer named Eugène Levavassèur. This metal hose was based on a helically coiled metal strip with an S-shaped profile interlocked along the windings of the helical coil. This design did not allow for a tight fit due to a cavity between teh interlocking profiles which was sealed using a rubber thread.
A important and improved version of the metal hose was designed by inventor Siegfried Frank of Frankfurt Germany, by means of rolling a helical corrugation into a smooth rigid pipe and the same was patented in 1894. However, it wa only in the thirties of the 29th century that Albert Dreyer of Switzerland, a hotel administrator by profession succeeded in creating a workable and viable annular corrugation that lead to the commercial manufacture of metal corrugated hoses.
In 1909, Emil Witzenmann, son of Heinrich Witzenmann, improved the design of the corrugated annular construction that did not need any kind os sealing material, by seamlessly welding together the strip edges and in 1920 he invented the metallic expansion joint based on a double walled and welded corrugated metal hose with a protective wraparound sheath.
These were the first designs, and with regular improvements in technology, design and choice of materials have led to one of the most popular metal hoses with a varied applications – the Stainless Steel Flexible hoses.
